  • Do not try to handle your personal injury case yourself. That would be like playing a game where you don’t know all the rules, and betting your future on the outcome. The Internet can’t teach you what we have learned in years of advanced schooling and decades of experience. The insurance companies will tell you that you do not need a lawyer; that alone should tell you that you do! They know that without a seasoned trial attorney in your corner, they have you at a tremendous disadvantage. Don’t give them that edge.
  • Do not hire an attorney recommended by a stranger who contacts you out of the blue, right after your accident. These people usually identify themselves as a “broker” or “investigator,” but they are really just shady hustlers who will sell your case to the highest bidder. Choose your lawyer after researching his or her credentials, even if that lawyer was recommended by someone you know.
  • Do not talk to anyone about your claim. If an adjuster or investigator from an insurance company should contact you, take his/her name and telephone number and then refer them to your lawyer.
  • Do not sign or initial any documents, or accept any money or checks, without first consulting your lawyer.
  • Be very careful about using social media after an accident. The insurance companies and defense lawyers routinely review social media posts, and are very adept at using innocent statements against you.
  • Take photographs of your injuries and any vehicles or premises related to your injuries as soon as possible, and keep a folder of your medical bills and other proofs of damages.
